Hello,

Here are the steps necessary to create and tweak the specular layers in Grome:

1. First you need to add and assign a layer to the selected zones:

2. At assign dialog select any Texture (I've selected a small white texture from /Libraries/Textures/Misc/white.tga). This texture is ignored by the layer. Then at the mask press new and select the size (I've selected 512 x 512). This indicates where the specular is present on the surface:

3. Then at Layer Shading Configuration select Masked Specular (2x):

4. For now the specular is not visible since the initial mask I've left black. Now I go to MaskGen and add a distribution mask. I want to have the specular show only on slopes bigger than 30 degrees so I choose 30 from Slope min:

5. Next I assign the distribution mask to my specular layer (which should be in use as indicated by the red button next to it) and apply the tool:

6. After this I may need to change the settings of the scene light. From the scene tab I modify the light direction points from a good angle:

7. Here is the final result (in my test case):

Make sure you have the viewport port in Lit mode (from the right corner of the viewport).

To be noted that in case your specular layer doesn't appear, it may be that your build version has an issue. Some time ago there was a bug at the specular layer. If this is the case drop us an email at support at quadsoftware.com with your version number and we will provide a link to the fix.

Kind Regards,
Adrian L.

Hi,

I am glad that my response helped you.

Also, I am sorry, but I don't understand what you mean by "craybump". Can you provide more details?

Regards,
Adrian L.

Hi,

The mask of the layer is the specular power. So were it is completely white the specular is fully shinning, where is grey it is half shinning and where is dark there is no specular. If you choose a bigger resolution for the layer mask you have more control over the specular (where to appear and with what strength).

So, if you are using MaskGen, and, for example, and choose to have the mask created between 0 and 20 degrees (on flat areas) and choose an att (attenuation) of 10 degrees, your specular will appear full on 0..20 degrees and then gradually fades away for the next 10 degrees to completely dark.

Being a mask, you have all other tools at your disposal:
- manual brush paint
- flowmap generation (so you can have specular shown only on flowmaps or inverse)
- mask filters (increase brightness, contrast, invert etc)

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,
Adrian L.
