That is an internal format we are using and the demo version is using that. With Grome full license you will have all the format plugins active so you can read from formats like collada which are used by many 3d modeling packages (3DS Max, Maya, Blender etc). Other formats are coming like Google Earth / Sketchup format.
With the SDK you can also write your own format so your own meshes are browsed, visualized and spawn as any native format.
So I should not worry about .surf format since Grome is extensible enough (via SDK) to use any existing format.
